Lessons from Pothos
Lessons from Pothos I believe much of what we need to know about sustaining healthy relationships can be gleaned from the intentional observation of nature. You are not required to subscribe to my belief, but I invite you to consider what a thriving plant can teach us about restoration, renewal, and growth. The Gift of a Cutting My Sistah-friend in Florida cares for a magnificent pot of pothos. It is the centerpiece of her lanai—her screened porch, for those of us who live ou

THE HONEY MAN
THE HONEY MAN Four children under twelve and I piled into EarthMother—my blue car—to visit The Honey Man. We needed honey for our daily coffee, and for health reasons we prefer it locally made and harvested. I also like taking the kids on outings their parents might not think about doing. During the pandemic, we discovered we could buy honey just steps from the hives where bees do their work. Honey does not appear by accident. Making honey is dangerous and time-consuming

SNEAKERS AND SCARVES
SNEAKERS AND SCARVES The father asked, “Son, how many pairs of sneakers do you own?” The son answered with a number that was more than he could wear in a month if he wore a different pair every day. The father turned to his friend, “And how many pairs do you own?” The friend answered with a number that far exceeded the son’s. The combined pairs of sneakers could easily stock a small footwear store. Not to sound judgmental - the question that begged an answer: is this a case

COFFEE YOGA BALANCE
COFFEE YOGA BALANCE As the coffee pot begins to gurgle – indicating the rising temperature of the water necessary for a perfect brew, I stand facing the window adjacent to the pot in tadasana, the yoga mountain pose that aids proper posture, better balance, strengthens the legs and can be a resting pose. It is my preparation pose before balancing on one leg and foot while the opposite leg and foot are raised off the floor. Breathing is an important component while holding t

FATHER
FATHER Remember I am on a quest to become unencumbered in 2026, and help comes from unusual places. What did you sincerely learn from your father? This was the writing prompt from a book that I have used to learn to be a better writer since April,2025. Each day the instructions following the prompt are “Go. Ten minutes.” I experienced a moment of panic because I didn’t want to squander any of the ten minutes trying to think of a profound and elaborate story to recount.

AKT
AKT “You can only understand real Action through action itself – Knowledge through knowledge… and Truth through truth.” I read this quote on the morning of October 31, 2024, and again on October 2, 2025, in the “Little Book of Wisdom,” by Maryam Mafi. On Thursday January 8, 2026, I read the quote again, this time in an old journal, the repository of blog starters. According to the journal, October 31, 2024, was filled with plans. The check marks indicated much was accompl

GREAT LISTENER
GREAT LISTENER “Describe someone you admire as a great listener,” was the instruction given in a book that I am currently reading. Improving my listening skills has been a quest of mine for many years and I would like to think that I have worked my way into being a pretty good one. But the question was not addressed to my listening skills. The word, “great,” at first made it a bit difficult to answer the request. People who talk a lot are generally not great listeners – my
