THOUGHTS AND SHADOWS

Indulge in child’s play at some point during the next few days, try to lose your shadow.

I walk at various times of the day but primarily early morning before the sun rises. One difference in walking before sunrise and after sunrise is that my body does not produce a visible shadow. The sun makes the difference. The length of my shadow is dependent on the direction of the sun and related to the time of day. No matter how short my shadow appears, I cannot walk on my head or any other part of the shadow of my physique. I have tried. Yet it is always just in front of me.

One thing that doesn’t change before or after sunrise or in the middle of day is my thought life. By this I mean, I am always thinking about something – something is always the object of my thoughts. The struggle is controlling the kind of thoughts and sometimes I just want a mind free of thoughts. The object of my thinking in those instances is “not thinking.”

Where is this line of thought (pun intended) going? I cannot neither leave nor walk on my shadow. I cannot leave my thought life behind. To utter, “I just won’t think about…,” is as futile as trying to step on the head of my shadow. So where does this leave me particularly when my thoughts threaten to derail my life? Thoughts can do that.

Humans have the amazing capability to reshape both our shadows and our thoughts. The process is similar for both.

If I don’t like the silhouette being casted as I walk, I cannot change the sun, but I can change my direction – pretty simple but I still cannot walk on my shadow. If I find my thoughts disturbing and uncomfortable, denial is futile, and I cannot change the reality of having thoughts. Acknowledging their existence opens the door wide for a change of direction, resulting in the potential for reshaping … think on things that are true, honorable, just.

You are your shadow and your thoughts. You are one. What YOU look like, how both are reflected to you or displayed to others is a matter of choice…but you cannot leave them.

Colossians 3:2
