DO YOUR BEST
Korean saying, “Do your best and then await the will of Heaven.”
I read the quote and wanted you to incorporate the sentiment of the words into your life as I am attempting to do into mine. Read the words again.
There are two things that we can choose to properly manage - our bodies and minds. Whatever name you ascribe to a higher power gives you that choice but all else is controlled by God in my case. The one who does their best to control/enhance these controllables – mind and body is the one collaborating WITH God/Universe for the potential of the best outcome. The one who does less than their best to control/enhance mind and body is working in opposition and potentially decreasing the potential best outcome. Either case, awaiting the will of Heaven is inevitable.
What then is a practical application for this thought? We can start with one of the necessities of life, food. You are what you eat. This is not debatable. For many of us, fat and sugar ingested habitually results in fat bodies, high cholesterol, high glucose levels etc. Eating less of the undesirable (but oh so good) and eating earlier has its benefits. Exercise – movement- a good cheerful outlook, solid relationships result in the potential for a longer healthier life. These work with nature to improve the length and quality of life. Bad habits not so much so. Yet neither is a guarantee leading some to say, “why bother.”
Your best is a personal measurement. It is your subjective assessment that produces measurable results (objective).
My personal assessment of my eating and exercising is ranked by me as exceptional. The scales at the doctor’s office (objective) tell a slightly different story. My weight has fluctuated within a 5-pound range for the last 10 years. It is not optimal based on current guidelines. To my doctor’s credit he has never said, “lose weight,” although he once referred me to a nutritionist.
I share this snippet with you because over the years, I have attempted to do my best with weight and exercise. I see these as controllables. There is room for improvement and that is a goal.
The quote opened a door that I am choosing to walk through. I need not be enslaved by a quest for the ideal weight. I do my best to eat right. I exercise daily. I correct my funky attitude when necessary. My DNA and Heaven shapes the rest. I am finally okay with that. I have carried the weight burden too long. I have gathered the courage to lay it down. Goodbye!
