TAKE A MOMENT
Do you happen to your day, or does your day happen to you? They are two different ways of living as one is on the quest for a healthier, holy (morally and spiritually excellent), whole life (my purpose). Most days I utter these words early in the morning – “I want to happen to this day rather than this day happening to me.” The day that I happen to -show up to, greet, or embrace - starts before my feet touch the multi-colored rug beside my bed.
When I began feeling the nagging pain in my buttocks which would later turn into the raging pain that you already know about, I decided to assess what I did before leaving the bed to minimize the pain. It is always worse when I get up in the morning or sit for too long. I believe in getting proper rest so a minimum of six hours in bed is the goal. I am a writer. I have yet to master the art of writing while standing and walking, so sitting for long periods of time is reality. What then was I to do differently in the mornings so that I could happen to my day rather than letting the daily dose of morning pain have control? I am glad you asked.
Stretch! With a bit of research, I discovered a few exercises that work the muscles from the feet up through the legs, thighs, buttocks, and lower back. I perform them before I leave the comfort of the mattress. I plan time for stretching into my morning routine. Notice the word “PLAN.” I can wake up, jump from bed and begin my day without stretching but I have discovered that I am setting into motion a day filled with physical discomfort. I want as close to a stress free – pain free day as possible. For me, the best way to come close is to PLAN to STRETCH.
I ask the question again. Do you happen to your day or does your day happen to you? Admittedly, we are incapable of controlling much of what is thrown at us daily - stuff happens. I believe I should control what is in my meager power to control. For now, my challenge (pain in the buttocks) is controllable – why wouldn’t I do so?
PS…I have shared in the past that everything I write in these four hundred plus words, designed to be read in two minutes or less, are written about me and my struggles. As I work through my stuff and share it with you, I hope it speaks to a situation, sparks a thought or propels you to action in your life. Then I hope you will pass your learning on to someone else. We are blessed to bless. Thanks for reading the journey of pain in the butt. It continues.
PONDER THIS THOUGHT --- An investment of forethought and action can produce huge returns.
