ROBBED BY A WINDOW

PRACTICE: Don’t change your habits, but for the next five days, note the number of times you purchase food that is served through a window.

“IF IT COMES THROUGH A WINDOW, DON’T EAT IT.”

This a personal cardinal rule that I rarely break and only if hunger can no longer be ignored or my options are extremely limited. Why? I believe most foods that come through a window have a high potential to be deep fried and or highly processed, sodium and or sugar filled, and precooked so that it be quickly reheated. (please note that I said most). Then the food is bagged with more salt or other sugar filled packets and pushed through that window for rapid and immediate consumption and instant gratification. This of course gives one the license to quickly be on their merry way without slowing down, chewing the food sufficiently and experiencing the wonder of taste and texture. Interestingly enough over time our taste buds become desensitized to the taste of wholesome and nutritious food and one only wants and craves meals that come through a window.

NOW, what does the window rob us of? Let’s face it, ours is a sedentary society, windows/drive throughs rob us of a few hundred/thousand steps from the car to the inside of the restaurant and back. Because of windows, we have a generation where many believe that food was meant to come in a paper bag with a toy. They have no idea where a French fry originates. Don’t believe me? Show a random child a real potato and ask what is long and skinny and comes from this. Or an uncooked chicken breast and ask the same question. Windows have robbed us of the sweet aroma of food being prepared in our homes – in the absence of home cooking, an entire industry has been created around aromas – scented candles, pumpkin, vanilla, cinnamon etc.

There is no expectation that these words will bring any change (we love conveniences). I would hope that at least your awareness would be raised around the subtle ways we give others control of bodies.
