PRACTICE: Without much thought, describe you in your world.
“To live is the rarest thing in the world. Most people just exist.” Oscar Wilde
I read this quote somewhere and curiosity sent me scurrying the internet to know more about this man and what would prompt him to come to this conclusion. Research revealed that Wilde packed a lot of living into his short 46 years of life, two of which were spent in prison. Given the average life expectancy in America, most of us can expect to live more than 46 years…which means a longer opportunity to be a rare person…to do more than exist. (Exist has many definitions… its use here means to live at an inferior level or under adverse circumstances).
When I think of just existing, I see a life being lived devoid of flavor, color, excitement and fulfilment. It is as if one is waiting for something to happen but doesn’t know what that something is, so one waits. While in this waiting mode, one’s entrance into the space of others causes nothing to change…energy levels neither increase or decrease. Their causative affect is flat. Existing means that their life is the proverbial wallflower at the proverbial dance. Existing often means that one has grown so accustomed to being unnoticed, and perhaps underappreciated AND that they are totally comfortable. Just existing, my friends, is dangerous.
Remember the definition of exist is to “live at an inferior level.” I don’t think the uniquely, distinctly designed YOU was put on this earth to just exist. There are 7.7 billion people on this earth. Not one of them is you. Not one of the people who lived before you was you. Nor will there be a you when you depart this earth. To just exist is to miss the grand opportunity to leave your imprint on YOUR world…notice I said your world. So, I push you once again…Describe you in your world.
What’s the intended message behind these words? LOOK life squarely in the face and attempt something new and different frequently to expand your boundaries…try a new food, take a different route home. LOOK life squarely in the face and expect life to offer something fresh and new. When the desire to attempt and the attitude of expectancy dance together---life is LIVED. My experiences tell me that this is my truth.
