C= 2π X R

Without a center it is impossible to determine the circumference. In geometry, the circumference is the length of the circle if it were straightened out. Circumference = The center is the key to figuring out the circumference of the circle. If you are as far removed from the halls of academia as I am, then everything you just read might be puzzling.

Why is the principle of this math equation worth exploring? Each of us operates in a variety of circles… work, friends, etc.… you know your circles. The circumference of your circles is our sphere of influence/how we relate to or shape the actions of those who make up the circle. You and I are the center of our circles. If or when I am not grounded - knowing what centers me, my circle becomes misshapen, a blob. In the referenced equation, the double capitol “π” (Greek letter Pi) represents an unchanging, constant number, 3.14. It behooves each of us to search and find our irrefutable constant.

The circumference of a circle is 3.14 multiplied by two multiplied by the radius. If there is no center the radius cannot be measured. Bottom line – no center – no radius and no true circumference. Know your center, measure your radius, multiply and you have your circumference. Why is this crucial for those of us wanting to live a balanced life?

Uncentered people run the risk of manipulating others and run just as high of a risk of being manipulated. Life may be lived in a state of panic or lethargy or a combination of both. Either place leaves one open and vulnerable for the quick fix of a smooth-talking shyster or “too good to be true plan of action.” Lack of knowledge of one’s center can make one restless, keeps one searching for the balm to soothe an undefinable itch or looking for the perfect plug to fill an imperfect hole. Lack of direction and purpose become valued (falsely) playmates. In this state one’s words and actions do not align and the sphere of influence, if ever present, begins to wane. We all are acquainted with the persons who are reckless with the truth. Need I say more.

I encourage you, as I encourage myself, to define and redefine your center – what are your core values (“π”) and then constantly live those out as best you can and watch your circumference (sphere of influence) grow.

When we are grounded and centered, those who make up our circle know that we can be trusted and counted on. They will sing an irrepressible song about us to us and to others. Others will hear and be drawn into our circle. What an incredible gift and responsibility.

PONDER THIS THOUGHT— Well centered and well-grounded people draw others like hummingbirds are drawn to the sweet nectar of the flower.
